A Toydarian junk dealer in Mos Espa, it was the winged, ever-grousing Watto who bought Schmi Skywalker and her son Anakin from Gardulla the Hutt. Never one to miss a trick, Watto wound up sponsoring talented young Anakin in several local Podraces, but he often bet against his own slave, figuring more experienced racers had the edge. Eventually, the Toydarian lost Anakin when he made an unwise wager with visiting Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn. Anakin won the Boonta Eve Podrace, and was freed.
